Description

Hotjar is a product experience insights platform that shows how people behave on a website through heatmaps, session recordings, and on-site surveys.

Setup guide

Follow our setup guide to connect Hotjar to Improvado.

Click the Connections in the left navigation bar.
Categories on the Data sources page group all available platforms. Use a search to find the required one.

Click on the Hotjar tile.

To authorize your account you need to fill in the required fields below following steps 3.1 - 3.4:

  • Connection Name
  • Hotjar Site IDs
  • Client ID
  • Client Secret

In Hotjar, open Settings and click API to open your API page. Only a user with Admin permissions in the Hotjar Organization can generate API credentials.

Select the Organization the credentials are for, enter a Credential name, select the Scope, and click Generate credentials. Copy the Client ID and the Client Secret.

Open Settings and click Sites & Organizations to open your Sites list. Copy the numeric Site ID of every site you want to extract data from.

Enter the copied values into the Improvado connection form. Enter a name of your choice into Connection Name, and list the site IDs in Hotjar Site IDs separated by commas, for example 12345, 67890. Each site becomes a separate account you can select during data extraction.

After the connection is completed, the Hotjar connection will appear in your Connected sources list.

When the connection status is Active, and the account status column shows a number of accounts, you can move on to data extraction.

To extract data from the connected sources, check the instruction on how to set up data extraction.

Schema information

The schema information shows all report types you can use to extract data from Hotjar.

Limits

Hotjar survey data is available on the Ask Scale plan. On other plans the API does not return survey data.

Hotjar API keys expire one year after they are generated and cannot be extended. Generate a new key before the expiration date and update your Improvado connection, otherwise data extraction stops.

One connection covers the sites listed in Hotjar Site IDs. To add a site later, edit the connection and add its Site ID to the list.

Release notes

Hotjar does not publish a separate API changelog. The API is versioned globally and Hotjar commits to giving at least six months notice before retiring a version. Version and endpoint details are documented in the official Hotjar API Reference.
