Instagram

Instagram is a very popular and free image and video-sharing app from Facebook. With over one billion active users, Instagram is a leading social media platform. Instagram offers businesses a wide range of incredibly powerful marketing tools. The app is available on Android, Apple iOS, and Windows Phone.

Instagram allows people to upload photos and videos to the service and also share them with their online followers or with a specific group of friends. You can choose from different types of ads, like photo ads, carousel ads, video ads, and stories ads.

Users can also view, like, and comment on posts shared by their friends on the app. An Instagram account collects data in an Instagram API data warehouse. Companies often have to extract that valuable data for analysis in their business intelligence tools.

Domo

Domo is an excellent business intelligence tool and provides you with the widest data set as well as connector support. Domo delivers a unique and fantastic set of social collaboration features too. Domo is a powerful and reliable cloud-based platform which connects to over 500 data sources and provides you with more than 300 valuable interactive charts and dashboards along with native apps for mobile platforms.

The BI tool was created in order to help businesses find viable and effective solutions to some of the most pervasive and complex business challenges.

Extracting data

Before loading your data into Domo, you will have to prep it first. If you don't already have a data structure in which to store the data you retrieve, you'll have to create a schema for your data tables. Then, for each value in the response, you'll need to identify a predefined datatype (INTEGER, DATETIME, etc.) and build a table that can receive them.

Instagram API documentation should tell you what fields are provided by each endpoint, along with their corresponding datatypes.Complicating things is the fact that the records retrieved from the source may not always be "flat" – some of the objects may actually be lists.

In these cases you'll likely have to create additional tables to capture the unpredictable cardinality in each record.

Preparing data

You can retrieve data programmatically through the Instagram API. It is available to all users who use the platform. By leveraging Improvado, you can easily and quickly integrate, connect, and see all your Instagram Insights data flow into Chartio. Follow the API documentation, and you will enjoy access to endpoints, like impressions, CTRs, and CPC.

You can access the API through the SDKs which Instagram offers. Officially, the platforms support SDKs for PHP and Python, while there’re also a number of SDKs (community supported) for languages such as R,  Ruby, and JavaScript. Data will be returned in either CSV or XLS format, and when your report is ready based on the request, you may access it from a URL.

You may also export a report that you have created and saved.

Loading data

You can leverage the power of Domo’s data pipeline with the incredible flexibility of the DataSet API import capability. Domo is a great platform that allows you to quickly and easily store, aggregate, transform, and query data. Hence, with Domo, your data can easily provide power rich and insightful visualizations. You must first have your DataSet created in order to import data.

To load your data in CSV format, keep in mind that the Domo specification used to represent data grids in the CSV format often closely follows the popular RFC standard for CSV (known as RFC-4180).

Domo extends the RFC in the following two ways:

  • Optionally using line feeds without a carriage return as the row separator
  • Support of various unicode characters

Also, note that all data uploaded in this specific format has to comply fully with a schema that’s supplied separately from the upload. The CSV, for example, has to comply with the field types and the correct number of columns. When creating your new DataSet through the API, store your DataSet's dataset ID, or you can simply retrieve the preferred dataset ID via the DataSet API.

With your dataset ID, it is vital to choose an appropriate update method when you are importing data through the API. You have two choices. You can either APPEND or REPLACE the data which currently exists in your DataSet.

Note that if you choose APPEND, it will incrementally create new data rows to your dataset as they’re imported via the API. On the other hand, REPLACE will remove your existing data and then refresh your DataSet with all of the data from your last import through the API. Once you have chosen the kind of update Method for the data that you plan to import, you will have to use your dataset ID to make the request. Domo will then return a response of either success or failure for the outcome of data being loaded into DataSet.

Domo is an amazing tool as it eliminates the guesswork from your advertising campaigns. It provides you with crucial insights into all your ad campaigns. You can create a customized and helpful dashboard with the most important and relevant KPIs, schedule a number of automatic reports, or even set up alerts for certain metrics.

Keeping data up to date

The key is building your script so that it can sense incremental updates made to the data.

Thankfully, Instagram API results include fields so that you can identify those records which are new since the last update you made (or since the most recent record you have copied). Once you have taken new data into consideration, you can easily set your script either as a continuous loop or cron job to pull down new data as soon as it appears.

The Easiest And Fastest Way To Do It

If all this sounds a bit overwhelming, don't worry -- there is an easier way to get this done!

Thankfully, products like Improvado were developed to move data from Instagram to Domo automatically. Using Improvado, you can easily combine the most crucial and relevant data from your social media ad campaign into a dashboard. You can then connect this data to Domo.
